Dermabrasion helps to “refinish” the skin’s top layers through a method of controlled surgical scraping. The treatment softens the sharp edges of surface irregularities, giving the skin a smoother appearance.
Dermabrasion is most often used to improve the look of facial skin left scarred by accidents or previous surgery, superficial acne scars, or to smooth out fine facial wrinkles. Dermabrasion can be performed on small areas of skin or on the entire face. A small area can be treated in the office with a local anesthetic whereas a full face treatment may require twilight sedation. The area(s) treated may be red, swollen and tender, but most patients feel comfortable to return to work after a few days. After one week, makeup can be applied to the treated areas to help conceal. It could take a series of dermabrasion treatments scheduled several months apart to achieve the maximum results.
